The deadline you have to hit is not the one on the registration page.
Extended time, breaks, a separate room, a reader: none of it happens because a student has an IEP at school. Each test maker approves accommodations separately, on its own timetable, and every one of those timetables runs earlier than the registration deadline families are watching. This page is the dates and the process for the five tests we prepare students for.
Start the moment you know the test is coming. For the SAT, College Board says approval can take up to seven weeks, and if it asks for more documentation, that is another seven.
SAT

Almost always the school. Your school's SSD coordinator submits the request through SSD Online, which is why the first call is to the counseling office rather than to College Board. Families can request without the school, but it is the slower path.
An IEP or a 504 plan means the SAT accommodations are automatic.
It does not. College Board states plainly that students approved for IEPs or 504 plans in school do not automatically receive accommodations on its tests, and the request has to be approved before test day. What the plan does buy you is a lighter documentation load: if you are asking for the same accommodations the student already has in the plan, College Board says no additional information may be needed.
- Up to seven weeks to review a complete request.
- Another seven weeks if College Board asks for more documentation, or if a request has to be resubmitted.
- Approved less than 14 days before test day, and the accommodation may not be in place for that test.
The deadlines below run about seven weeks ahead of each test date, which puts them one to two months before the registration deadline for the same test.

ACT
ACT, Test Accessibility and Accommodations
The student starts it and the school finishes it. The student links a high school to their MyACT account, answers yes when asked about accommodations, and forwards a consent form to a school official, who submits the request. Schools submit on behalf of enrolled students.
One deadline instead of two, as of June 2026
ACT moved the accommodations request deadline to the regular registration deadline. For the ACT, the date you already have in your calendar is the date, which makes this the simplest of the five to plan around.
National Testing
Accommodations that work at an ordinary weekend test center, extended time being the common one. The student tests on the national test date with everyone else.
Special Testing
Accommodations that cannot be delivered on a national test day, such as testing across multiple days. It runs in a nine-day window instead of on the Saturday.
ACT does not publish a fixed review time. It says timelines vary with submission volume and how complete the documentation is, so the honest planning assumption is the same as the SAT: early.

ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT
These three work differently from the SAT and the ACT, and differently from each other. For the ISEE and the SSAT you apply yourself rather than through the school, and both of them make you wait for the decision before you register.
ISEE
ERB
The family, directly. You request accommodations from your parent account, on the student's dashboard, rather than going through the school. The school still has a job: a Current School Statement describing the accommodations the student actually uses has to be completed by school staff.
Documentation
One of an IEP, 504, or private school plan; a professional evaluation; or proof that similar standardized tests approved the same accommodations. Whichever you use, it has to be dated within three years.
Review time
One to two weeks once the application is complete, and longer if the documentation is thin.
Approval lasts
24 months from the date of approval.
Do not register for a test date until the accommodations decision comes back. ERB says so directly, and registering first is how families end up paying a rescheduling fee.

SSAT
EMA
The family, from the student's account, naming an approver who confirms the request. That approver has their own form to complete, so the timeline depends partly on how quickly they act.
Documentation
An IEP or a 504 plan, which has to show a history of the disability and that it substantially limits a major life activity.
Review time
Up to two weeks from the point EMA has every required item.
Approval lasts
The testing year it was approved in, which runs August 1 to July 31, plus one more testing year.
Approval has to be in hand before you register for an accommodated SSAT, not after. For standard paper tests, accommodated registration closes 14 days before the test date.

HSPT
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and the high school itself
The HSPT is the outlier. There is no testing company to apply to and no central portal: accommodations are arranged with the high school, which makes the admissions office the first call rather than the last.
Nine Archdiocesan high schools offer testing accommodations to students who don't attend an Archdiocesan or Independence Mission elementary school: Archbishop Carroll, Archbishop Ryan, Archbishop Wood, Bishop Shanahan, Conwell-Egan, Lansdale Catholic, Pope John Paul II, St. Hubert, and Roman Catholic. Contact the high school directly to arrange them.
Documentation has to be in before the deadline. Late or walk-in registration generally forfeits accommodations entirely, so this is the one part of the process not to leave until the end.

What we do and do not do here
We are not a clinical practice. We do not diagnose, we do not write evaluations or psychoeducational reports, and we cannot file a request on your behalf. Those requests go through your school, and the documentation comes from a qualified evaluator.
What we can do is prepare a student to use what they have been approved for. Extended time changes how a section should be paced, and a student who has never practiced with it often uses it badly the first time, either rushing out of habit or spending the extra minutes on the wrong questions. Breaks, a separate room, and a reader all change the rhythm of a test day too. We build that into the prep rather than treating it as a footnote.
We will also tell you, honestly, when a deadline has already passed and the sensible move is the next test date rather than this one.
The one thing worth taking away
Every process on this page needs your school to do something, and schools are slowest in the weeks families most want to move quickly: late August, and the run-up to winter break. The families who get this right start a term ahead of the test they are aiming at.
